# Ooze: Owning the Dab Pen Category in Organic Search

**Type:** Case study
**Client:** Ooze (vape hardware ecommerce, national)
**Services:** SEO
**Constraint:** Paid advertising channels largely closed to the category
**Measured:** Google Search Console, June 1 to September 16 2026 vs the same period a year earlier
**Canonical:** https://www.winstondigitalmarketing.com/our-work/ooze-dab-pen-category/

Ooze sells vape hardware in a category where most paid advertising is closed off, so organic search carries the demand. Across the dab pen and wax pen cluster, the site now ranks positions 3 to 4 against national competition. Site-wide average position moved from 27.2 to 9.0 and click-through rate from 4.9% to 7.3% year over year.

## Context: a category that cannot buy its way in

Ooze makes vape hardware. Batteries, dab pens, dry herb vaporizers, concentrate rigs. It is a national ecommerce brand in a category where the major advertising platforms restrict or refuse the product outright, which means the usual growth lever is unavailable. You cannot outspend anyone. Whatever demand exists in search either finds you organically or finds a competitor.

That makes the keyword cluster around the product itself the entire battleground. Someone searching "dab pen" or "510 thread battery" is shopping. There is no branded shortcut to that traffic and no way to pay for the placement.

## What the search data shows

These are Google Search Console figures for June 1 to September 16, 2026, compared against the same period a year earlier. Position is Google's blended average across everyone who searched, not a rank-tracker snapshot from one location.

| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Site-wide average position | 27.15 | 8.99 |
| Site-wide click-through rate | 4.90% | 7.34% |
| "dab pen for wax" position | 5.3 | 3.2 |
| "dab pen for wax" clicks | 472 | 1,740 |
| Non-branded clicks in window | | 64,972 |

The cluster itself is where the story is. In the measured window the site earns 5,955 clicks on "dab pen" at position 4.0, 5,556 on "510 thread battery" at 5.9, 2,709 on "cart battery" at 5.5, 1,740 on "dab pen for wax" at 3.2, and 1,041 on "wax pen" at 5.4. One collection page carries most of that cluster.

Those are top-five placements on the highest-volume commercial terms in the category, held against national competitors, in a market where none of them can advertise their way past you either. The average position move from 27 to 9 is the part that matters most, because position 27 is page three and effectively invisible, while position 9 is on the board.

## What actually moved the needle

Two things are visible in the data. The first is consolidation: the dab pen and wax pen cluster resolves to a single strong collection page rather than being split across a dozen competing product pages. In a category with this much keyword overlap, that concentration is what lets one URL rank for the whole family of terms instead of several URLs splitting the authority between them.

The second is the click-through rate move from 4.9% to 7.3%. A ranking improvement alone does not do that. A roughly fifty percent relative gain in CTR means the results themselves became more clickable at a given position, which comes from titles, descriptions, and the structured data that shapes how a result is presented.

## What this case study does not claim

We publish our pricing and we will publish our caveats, because a number you cannot check is worth nothing.

- **Ooze is not ranked number one on the head terms.** The big commercial keywords sit between positions 3 and 6. The number-one rankings the site does hold are mostly for Ooze product names, which are effectively branded terms and prove far less than a generic win does.
- **Total organic clicks are down year over year.** Impressions fell further than clicks did, and position and click-through rate both improved substantially. This is a case study about owning a category and converting the visibility better, not about a traffic line going up.
- **We are not claiming these numbers prove causation.** These are the rankings and the traffic. Search results move for many reasons.

If that last section costs us a lead, it is the right trade. The alternative is the version of this page that quotes a localized rank-tracker screenshot, claims a number one, and falls apart the first time a prospect checks it in Search Console.

## Why this pattern matters beyond vape hardware

Any brand in a restricted category runs the same problem: cannabis, CBD, firearms, supplements, alcohol, anything the ad platforms will not take. When you cannot buy demand, the organic and AI-answer surfaces stop being one channel among several and become the channel. Owning the category cluster is not a nice-to-have in that situation. It is the whole distribution strategy.

That is the same argument behind our cannabis marketing work (https://www.winstondigitalmarketing.com/services/cannabis-marketing/), and it is why we spend so much effort on whether a brand gets named by AI assistants as well as ranked by Google. Both surfaces answer the same question for a shopper who cannot be reached with an ad.
