You cannot run Google Ads to promote cannabis. Google prohibits cannabis advertising outright, the ban holds even in states where cannabis is legal, and because cannabis is still federally illegal there is no state-level exception that overrides it. Confirm the current Google Ads policy before you plan anything, since it moves, but for any dispensary or THC brand the working assumption is that paid Google Ads for your products is not available. The good news: the visibility that matters on Google, ranking and the map pack, is not gated by that ad policy.

## What Google's policy actually covers

Google treats cannabis as a prohibited product alongside other recreational drugs. That covers ads for cannabis and THC products, dispensary storefronts, delivery, and anything that promotes buying cannabis. State legalization does not matter; the policy is written and enforced to the federal line, the same reason Meta and TikTok reject cannabis ads. The full multi-state picture is in [cannabis advertising laws by state](https://www.winstondigitalmarketing.com/playbooks/cannabis-advertising-laws-by-state/).

## The CBD and hemp gray area

The one place there has ever been movement is hemp-derived CBD. Google has at points permitted limited advertising for certain topical, FDA-compliant CBD products in specific states under certification requirements, while prohibiting ingestible CBD and anything above the legal hemp THC threshold. The carve-out is narrow, conditional, changes without notice, and does not touch THC cannabis at all. If you sell CBD, verify the current policy before assuming you qualify. If you sell cannabis, it does not apply.

## What gets your account suspended

Google's systems detect cannabis intent well, and a suspension usually hits the whole account. Common triggers: ads that promote cannabis products or delivery; landing pages or linked menus that sell THC products even if the copy is vague; and neutral bridge pages that lead to a cannabis storefront. Because enforcement is automated and account-wide, it is not worth risking the account to test the edges.
